CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

Airports have the potential to be generators of economic growth, job creators and facilitators of international trade and tourism. To ensure these roles and continue to reap the benefits, airports must ensure sustainable development that includes the enhancement of non-aeronautical revenues as a critical component of an airport’s revenue stream and bottom line.
With less than 20% of commercial revenue, airports in Africa must transform themselves from being not just public service providers but commercial enterprises that generate profits.
The theme of this conference is “Business Transformation for Sustainable Development of African Airports“. The conference will discuss the need for a change in the perception of business in African airports, to improve the profitability of infrastructure, optimize resources, generate profits and ensure the sustainability of the business.
The conference will highlight the importance of industry partners and public-private partnership for innovative project creation, leadership and strategic planning as tools to achieve these goals.
The conference sessions are as follows:

Session 1: Airports business Transformation, a necessity or a utopia?
Many African airports still operate the traditional airport business which focused and survived on revenue from aeronautical sources. In a complex field, that requires responsiveness, the change in management and the business environment is inevitable to meet the expectations of customers, partners and regulatory and financial requirements.
Does airport business transformation only entail a shift in revenue generation or does it encompass a total change in ownership and business model? The panelists will discuss if the concept of airport business transformation is the solution to airport development in Africa.
Session 2: Take advantage of the partnership with industry to support business transformation
Panelists will discuss the ways that business partnerships can be encouraged to improve existing services or to create new revenue facilities and resources. There will also be discussions on the different roles that partners can play in the transformation and the development of the industry.
Session 3: Business innovation in Airport retail
During this session, the speaker will develop the aspects and interests of business innovation in airport retail that can benefit from the implementation of new ideas, creation of new products or improvement of existing services to generate new sources of revenues.
Session 4: The future of Airport tax free shops
Tax-free shopping is the first source of non-aeronautical revenue in most airports around the world.
The future of this activity is uncertain in certain airports given the new national and regional regulations such as the ban on the sale of cigarettes, and alcohol or the limitation of transport of purchases by air carriers.
Speakers will throw more light on the present situation, challenges faced and the future outlook of airport tax free shopping which continues to be one of the best supports for airports sustainability.
Session 5: Presentation of the African Airports Development Program
During this session, there will be a presentation of the African Airports Development Program created by ACI Africa to help member airports to improve and meet the challenges of airport operations and to achieve excellence in airport management and operation.
Session 6: Changing leadership Mindsets for succeed transformation
During this session, panelists will discuss the need to change mindsets and attitudes of leaders and organizational culture to successfully transform the business. They will trace the stages of change and report true experiences of transformation in their organizations
Session 7: The future of Airport charges and taxes
Airport operators are facing the challenges of upgrading their infrastructure, adding much-needed capacity to cope with traffic growth and improving their service quality to the passengers.  While airlines consistently require additional infrastructure, increased capacity and higher service levels, they systematically oppose to assuming the cost of such provision of airport facilities and services, disconnecting the request of developing airport to accommodate current and future demand from the funding of such development through charges. This session will explore past experiences and best practices in ensuring that airport operators can secure the funding of their operation and development projects through charges.
Session 8: Technology to support business transformation
Today’s challenges will not be solved by the old management methods supported by yesterday’s technology. Business transformation cannot be accomplished with outdated platforms, aging IT systems, and expensive, error-prone manual processes. Managers need the next generation of technologies that transform airports and respond effectively to the regulatory and commercial imperatives of future airports.
This session will identify technologies and techniques that can automate processes, optimize passenger flow, improve efficiency, and create new sources of revenue.
Session 9: Transformation in practice
During this session airport managers, experts and industry will talk about their experiences in setting up new processes, technologies, concepts or partnerships that have transformed their business. The session will take place as a workshop where groups of participants can develop their respective visions and approaches to business transformation in their airports.
