Flights were forced to hover for over 30 minutes at the Abuja airspace when an aircraft skidded off the runway and forced the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to shut down flight operations for 30 minutes a the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The incident involved a business jet owned by Nest Oil, which skidded off the runway when it landed at the airport.
FAAN explained that the aircraft lost its landing gear but the pilot was able to manage the aircraft to avert more grievous outcome, as the airplane, which could not taxi was pulled off the runway.
Information from the airlines indicated that aircraft on ground due to take off from the airport and others destined to the airport were meant to wait until the air traffic control announced resumption of flights.
the flights that were airborne hovered until they were directed to land on scheduled sequence, as flights on ground were also taking off.
In a statement signed by the head of corporate affairs, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, FAAN said concerted efforts were made to put the situation under control and normalcy was restored.
The agency said the closure of the airport at that point was to enable the authority take safety precautions,
