Hoodlums Destroy Critical NAMA Equipment, Injure Police, Other Security Operatives at Its Iju Facility

Hoodlums armed to the teeth have destroyed Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) navigation equipment, seriously injured security operatives, including two policemen guarding the site located at Iju, Lagos and made away with two 7.5KVA inverters ,12V tubular batteries used to power the equipment.

THISDAY learnt that the equipment damaged is Dopplar Voice Ominidirectional Radio Range (DVOR), which guides the aircraft into the airport and straight into the runway for landing.

The suspected hoodlums, numbering about 20, armed with cutlasses, axes and other weapons, stormed the site at about 5:05 am during a heavy downpour last Thursday, September 25, 2025 and attacked the police officers who were identified as Insp. Dada Fisayo and Insp. Francis Azurunwa, and other people in the facility.

After incapacitating the security operatives, the hoodlums vandalised the equipment and stole critical parts and escaped.

“The officers successfully repelled the attack. However, taking advantage of the downpour and the porosity of the compound, another group of hoodlums carted away two 7.5KVA inverters and some lengths of cables from the installation,” eye witness account narrated.

He also added that Insp. Fisayo sustained injuries and had been treated while a private security guard, Mr. Babatunde Makinde, also suffered a deep cut on his left hand and was receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, senior official of NAMA who spoke to THISDAY on the condition of anonymity, said that the damaged equipment gives the aircraft directive to the airport and guides it to the runway.

“That equipment was installed at Iju area of Lagos to guide the pilot to align the aircraft to the airport and guides the aircraft straight onto the runway. The hoodlums took a lot of things from the facility. But it was not easy for them because the security officials guarding the place put up a serious fight. They cut our staff there with machetes, including the security people. It was a big fight,” he said.
