NLC, NUATE Paralyse Activities at ASL

Unionists Picket ASL Facility at MMIA

Aviation unions with the support of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has intensified the picketing of the Skycare Catering services ASL at the Lagos Airport, as the standoff enters day eight.

Members of the union in solidarity with their affiliate body National Union of Air Transport Employees NUATE matched around the arrival and departure halls of the Lagos International chanting solidarity songs and carried placards with inscriptions.

The union is calling for an end to the alleged unjust and unlawful condition of work to include employment without employment letters, no terms of engagement or conditions of service, arbitrary terminations, victimisation on the basis of joining and holding office  in a trade union, refusal to recognise a registered trade union.

Secretary General NUATE, comrade Ochemeba, said they  were yet to achieved the aim and that the picketing would continue to escalate with the assistance of the NLC Lagos state branch.

“Our demands are that ASLshould respect the constitution of Nigeria Section 40, recall the sacked union leaders in the company they have relieved about 18 months ago and stop the continued to victimisation of the workers”.

The Secretary General, Nigerian Union of Railway Workers, NUR, Comrade Segun Esan says the  action by the union was a direct response to a breach as it concerned the welfare and well being of the workers.

He emphasized that they would remain in solidarity with NUATE until the issues were addressed

“The Management is recalcitrant, for us it will be no retreat, no surrender”.

The NLC Chairman, Lagos state branch, comrade Agnes Funmi Sessi, said, “the Management must treat the workers right and until that was done, they would not give up on the action embarked on”.
