XENOPHOBIA: SOUTH AFRICA DEPORTS 97 NIGERIANS

 South Africa government yesterday deported 97 Nigerians resident in that country.
The deportation may be the climax of the xenophobic attacks against black immigrants in South Africa in which over 100 Nigerians were allegedly killed.
 
THISDAY learnt that the 97 Nigerians were deported from South Africa for civil and criminal offences; while six of the deportees were returned into the country for drug offences; 10 were arrested and deported for criminal offences while others committed immigration offences.
 
According to Immigration sources, which made this known on Tuesday, the deportees comprising males and females arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos with a chartered aircraft with the registration number GBB710 from Johannesburg, South Africa. 
 
The deportees are 95 males and two females.
 
Those deported for drug and criminal offences were immediately handed over to police for further prosecution while others with civil cases were left to go home after screening by the officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) at the airport.
